NY Next Generation Math NY-5.NBT.7

Math5th GradePerform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths.

The Standard

Using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between operations: • add and subtract decimals to hundredths; • multiply and divide decimals to hundredths.Relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths using models, drawings, and place-value strategies. They connect the representation to a written method and explain their reasoning.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student aligns decimal places for addition and uses an area model for multiplication. For division, the student solves model-friendly problems such as 0.6 divided by 0.2 without relying on a complex algorithm.

Common Misconceptions

Students may align decimal numbers by their final digits instead of place value. They may move decimal points by a rule without connecting the move to a model or operation meaning.

How to Assess It

Ask students to model and solve 1.2 times 0.4 and 0.75 divided by 0.25. Require a matching written method and explanation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use hundred grids and base-ten blocks to model decimal operations before recording the matching written steps.

  2. Ask students how place value explains the difference between 0.4 times 0.3 and 4 times 3.

  3. Play decimal-method match with models, operation expressions, written steps, and solutions to hundredths.

  4. Calculate prices, measured lengths, or equal decimal portions with models and labeled units.
