What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add and subtract whole numbers within 1,000 accurately and efficiently. They choose strategies or algorithms grounded in place value, operation properties, or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student solves 684 minus 297 as 387 using a reliable written method. The student explains each regrouping with hundreds, tens, and ones and checks the result with addition.

Common Misconceptions

Students may regroup without preserving place values or subtract the smaller digit from the larger digit in each column. They may apply a memorized procedure without checking whether the answer is reasonable.

How to Assess It

Ask students to solve 468 + 357 and 702 minus 286, then explain one step using place-value language.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Model an addition and subtraction problem with base-ten blocks, then connect every trade to a written step.

  2. Ask students to compare two correct methods and explain where the same place-value reasoning appears.

  3. Play error analysis with worked examples containing one regrouping or place-value mistake to locate and repair.

  4. Find changes in school attendance or library totals using numbers within 1,000.
