What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students fluently add and subtract within 100 using place value, operation properties, and relationships between addition and subtraction. They choose an efficient strategy and explain it.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student solves 47 + 36 by combining tens and ones and composing a new ten. The student solves 83 - 29 and checks the difference with addition.

Common Misconceptions

Students may combine tens with ones, regroup without preserving value, or subtract the smaller digit from the larger in each place. They may use a procedure without checking reasonableness.

How to Assess It

Ask students to solve 58 + 27 and 91 minus 46, then explain one strategy with place-value language.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Model sums and differences with base-ten blocks, then connect trades to written place-value steps.

  2. Ask students to compare two correct strategies for 64 minus 28.

  3. Play strategy match with equations, place-value drawings, decompositions, and related-fact checks.

  4. Update a classroom inventory after additions and removals while keeping totals within 100.
