What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find sums and differences within 10 reasonably quickly. They use known facts, patterns, or efficient strategies and say or write the answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student answers a varied set of facts within 10 accurately and without counting every object. The student can briefly explain a useful strategy when asked.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse fluency with racing and guess to finish quickly. They may rely on counting all for every fact instead of using known relationships.
How to Assess It
- Give eight mixed addition and subtraction facts within 10. Note accuracy, reasonable pace, and whether the student uses efficient thinking.
