What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find sums and differences within 10 reasonably quickly. They use known facts, patterns, or efficient strategies and say or write the answer.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student answers a varied set of facts within 10 accurately and without counting every object. The student can briefly explain a useful strategy when asked.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse fluency with racing and guess to finish quickly. They may rely on counting all for every fact instead of using known relationships.

How to Assess It

Give eight mixed addition and subtraction facts within 10. Note accuracy, reasonable pace, and whether the student uses efficient thinking.

  2. Ask students to explain which fact within 10 they can use to solve a related subtraction fact.

  3. Play a five-minute partner game matching addition facts, subtraction facts, and totals within 10.

  4. Count classroom supplies added to or removed from small sets and state each new total quickly.
