What Students Need to Do: Students find sums and differences within 5 reasonably quickly and accurately. They may know some facts, use patterns or strategies, or still use fingers and drawings while fluency develops.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student solves varied facts within 5 with growing ease and gives correct answers. The student selects a workable strategy without losing track of the quantities.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think fluency means racing or that using fingers is always wrong. They may confuse the operation sign or recount the whole set after a small change.
How to Assess It: Give six mixed addition and subtraction facts within 5. Observe accuracy, reasonable pace, and the strategies the student chooses.

Lesson moves

Use fingers, counters, and five-frames to build and solve mixed facts within 5.
Ask students which facts they know immediately and which strategy helps with the others.
Play within-five fact match using pictures, expressions, and totals.
Add or remove up to five classroom objects and state the new amount during daily routines.
