What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find sums and differences within 5 reasonably quickly and accurately. They may know some facts, use patterns or strategies, or still use fingers and drawings while fluency develops.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student solves varied facts within 5 with growing ease and gives correct answers. The student selects a workable strategy without losing track of the quantities.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think fluency means racing or that using fingers is always wrong. They may confuse the operation sign or recount the whole set after a small change.

How to Assess It

Give six mixed addition and subtraction facts within 5. Observe accuracy, reasonable pace, and the strategies the student chooses.
