What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students subtract a multiple of ten from another multiple of ten between 10 and 90. They use models, drawings, or place-value strategies and connect the reasoning to written numbers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student solves 70 minus 30 by removing three tens from seven tens and finds four tens, or 40. The student records the strategy and explains why the ones remain zero.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may subtract the tens digits and report 4 instead of 40. They may count back by ones or treat the zeros as digits to subtract without using place value.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to solve 80 minus 50 with a drawing or model and a written equation. Have them explain the answer in tens.
