What Mastery Looks Like: The student solves 7 times 40 as 7 times 4 tens, or 28 tens, which equals 280. The student explains the place-value reasoning.
Common Misconceptions: Students may append a zero without understanding why or multiply only the tens digit and lose its value. They may treat 40 as 4 ones.
How to Assess It: Ask students to solve 6 times 70 using a drawing, equation, or place-value explanation connected to 6 times 7.
