Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students multiply a number with up to four digits by one digit and multiply two two-digit numbers. They use place value and operation properties, then illustrate and explain with an equation, array, or area model.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student solves 2,346 times 4 or 27 times 36 accurately. The student connects each partial product in a model to a written calculation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ignore place value in partial products or omit a decomposed factor part. They may present an algorithm without connecting it to the model.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to solve 34 times 26 with an area model and matching equations. Require labels for every partial product.
