What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find whole-number quotients for dividends up to four digits and two-digit divisors. They use place value or multiplication relationships and explain with equations, arrays, or area models.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student solves 1,248 divided by 24 as 52 and checks that 24 times 52 equals 1,248. The student connects partial quotients to the model.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose partial quotients that exceed the remaining dividend or lose place value. They may give a decimal when the task asks for a whole-number quotient.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to solve 1,176 divided by 28 using an area model or partial quotients and verify by multiplication.
