What Students Need to Do
- Students divide dividends with up to four digits by one-digit divisors to find whole-number quotients and remainders. They use place value or multiplication relationships and explain with equations, arrays, or area models.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student solves 1,357 divided by 6 as 226 remainder 1 and checks that 6 times 226 plus 1 equals 1,357. The model matches the quotient parts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ignore a zero in the quotient or leave a remainder equal to or greater than the divisor. They may lose place value while subtracting partial products.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to solve 728 divided by 6 using an equation, array, or area model and check the quotient and remainder.
