What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students interpret a fraction quotient as how many groups fit or how large each group is. They compute fraction division and use it to solve contextual problems.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student explains that 3/4 ÷ 1/8 asks how many eighths fit in three-fourths and finds 6. The student also computes non-whole quotients and checks them by multiplication.

Common Misconceptions

Students may invert the first fraction, multiply the fractions without taking the reciprocal of the divisor, or expect every quotient to be a whole number. They may also leave mixed numbers unconverted before using the standard algorithm.

How to Assess It

Ask students to solve 2/3 ÷ 4/5, draw or describe a matching interpretation, and verify the quotient by multiplication.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use fraction strips to count how many one-eighth pieces fit into three-fourths, then connect the model to an equation.

  2. Ask students how the meanings differ between 1/2 ÷ 1/4 and 1/2 ÷ 4.

  3. Play quotient sort by matching fraction-division expressions, visual models, stories, and solutions.

  4. Find how many fractional recipe portions or ribbon lengths can be made from a given amount.
