What Students Need to Do
- Students interpret and compute a whole number divided by a unit fraction. They determine how many unit-fraction portions fit in the whole number.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student explains 3 divided by 1/4 as the number of fourths in 3 and finds 12. A model and multiplication equation confirm the quotient.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may produce a quotient smaller than the whole number because they think division always decreases. They may reverse the dividend and divisor.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to solve 4 divided by 1/3 using a drawing and a related multiplication equation.
