What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students divide unit fractions by nonzero whole numbers and divide whole numbers by unit fractions. They interpret each quotient using models, equations, and contexts.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student explains both 1/3 divided by 4 and 4 divided by 1/3, then computes accurately. The student distinguishes sharing a unit fraction from counting unit-fraction groups.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume the two division orders give the same quotient. They may multiply denominators without explaining why or divide by zero.

How to Assess It

Ask students to model and solve 1/2 divided by 3 and 3 divided by 1/2. Require one sentence explaining why the quotients differ.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut a one-half strip into three equal shares, then count half-size pieces contained in three wholes.

  2. Ask students how the meaning changes when 1/4 divided by 3 becomes 3 divided by 1/4.

  3. Play Division Sort by grouping models under unit-fraction-by-whole or whole-by-unit-fraction equations.

  4. Share half a pan of food among four people, then determine how many quarter-pan portions fit in three pans.
