The student represents 4 times 2/3 as four groups of 2/3 and finds 8/3. The student explains the product with a model and equation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may multiply both the numerator and denominator by the whole number. They may interpret 1/3 of 4, which is grade 5 work, instead of four groups of 1/3.

How to Assess It

Ask students to model and solve 5 times 3/4 as repeated groups, then write a matching multiplication equation.
