Standards in This Cluster
NY-7.NS.2 is a cluster heading. These are the individual standards under it.
- NY-7.NS.2.a
Understand that multiplication is extended from fractions to rational numbers by requiring that operations continue to satisfy the properties of operations, par...
- NY-7.NS.2.c
Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide rational numbers.
- NY-7.NS.2.d
Convert a fraction to a decimal using long division; know that the decimal form of a rational number terminates in 0s or eventually repeats.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students multiply and divide rational numbers, including negative fractions and decimals. They use operation properties, fraction relationships, and long division to determine signs, exact values, and terminating or repeating decimal forms.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student accurately multiplies and divides positive and negative rational numbers and simplifies the result. The student explains sign rules through properties or contexts, divides only by nonzero rational numbers, and converts a fraction to a terminating or repeating decimal.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may apply addition sign rules to multiplication or division. They may divide by zero or change a fraction's value while simplifying.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to find (-5/6)(-9/10) and (-3/4) divided by 1/2, simplify both results, and explain each sign. Then have them convert 5/12 by long division and mark the repeating block.

Ways to Teach It
Use two-color counters and number-line contexts to connect signed products and quotients to operation rules.
Ask students why a negative divided by a negative has a positive result.
Play rational-operation sort by predicted sign, operation, and simplified exact answer.
Model repeated gains, losses, rates, or equal sharing with signed rational quantities.
