What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve real-world problems that divide a unit fraction by a nonzero whole number or divide a whole number by a unit fraction. They interpret each quotient in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student chooses the correct division order, models it, and computes accurately. The student labels the quotient and explains what one group or share represents.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the dividend and divisor because both numbers appear in the story. They may assume division always makes a quantity smaller.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to determine how many one-third-meter pieces can be cut from 4 meters of ribbon. Require a model, equation, and labeled answer.

Ways to Teach It
Use paper strips to model sharing 1/2 meter among three students and cutting 3 meters into one-half-meter pieces.
Ask students how context reveals whether a unit fraction or whole number is being divided.
Play Story Sort by matching division contexts to unit-fraction-by-whole and whole-by-unit-fraction equations.
Determine how many quarter-cup servings fit in 5 cups of soup.
