What Students Need to Do

Students interpret a whole-number quotient as either the size of each equal share or the number of equal groups. They connect a division expression to a context, model, and related multiplication fact.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student explains 24 divided by 6 as 24 objects shared among 6 groups, giving 4 in each group. The student also explains it as the number of groups of 6 in 24.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse the number of groups with the size of each group. They may treat division as subtracting once or write a story whose quantities do not match the expression.

How to Assess It

Show 24 divided by 6 and ask students to write two matching stories, one about equal shares and one about groups of 6.
