What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect a multiplication expression to equal groups, arrays, and situations. They explain what each factor and the product mean in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given 4 × 6, a student describes four groups of six and finds 24 objects altogether. The student can draw or build a matching model.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may describe 4 × 6 as four plus six or count only the groups. They may switch the factor meanings without adjusting the situation.
How to Assess It
- Show 5 × 3 and ask students to draw a model, label the groups and group size, and write one matching story.
