What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use whole-number exponents to write repeated multiplication compactly. They identify the base and exponent, then evaluate expressions containing powers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes 5 × 5 × 5 as 5³ and evaluates it as 125. The student also evaluates a numerical expression that combines powers with other operations.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply the base by the exponent or apply the exponent only to the last factor in a grouped product. They may confuse 3² with 2³.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to rewrite 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 with an exponent, then evaluate 2⁵ + 3² and explain both powers.
