What Students Need to Do: Students translate a sequence of calculations into a numerical expression. They also explain what a numerical expression means without finding its value.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student writes “add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2” as (8 + 7) × 2. The student explains that 3 × (18 + 2) means three times the entire sum without evaluating it.
Common Misconceptions: Students may place grouping symbols around the wrong calculation or reverse the order in subtraction and division. They may also evaluate an expression when the task asks only for its meaning.
How to Assess It: Ask students to write an expression for “subtract 4 from 20, then divide the result by 2.” Then ask them to interpret 5 × (9 + 1) without evaluating it.

Lesson moves

Arrange operation and number cards to build an expression from a spoken calculation, then read the expression back in words.
Ask students how 3 × (4 + 2) and 3 × 4 + 2 describe different calculation plans.
Match phrase cards to numerical expressions, including near-matches with misplaced grouping symbols, and justify each choice.
Write a numerical expression for a shopping plan with equal bags of items, then explain the plan without calculating the total.
