Standards in This Cluster
NY-6.EE.2 is a cluster heading. These are the individual standards under it.
- NY-6.EE.2.a
Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers.
- NY-6.EE.2.b
Identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (term, coefficient, sum, difference, product, factor, and quotient); view one or more parts of an expre...
- NY-6.EE.2.c
Evaluate expressions given specific values for their variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operatio...

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write expressions in which letters represent numbers, read the expressions in words, and identify their parts. They substitute given values and evaluate using the conventional order of operations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes “five less than twice n” as 2n - 5 and identifies 2 as the coefficient. When n = 4, the student evaluates the expression as 3 and explains each operation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse subtraction, treat 2n as 2 + n, or call every number a coefficient. They may also substitute a value without using the correct order of operations.
How to Assess It
- Give students 3x + 2² with x = 5. Ask them to name its terms and coefficient, read it aloud, and evaluate it.

Ways to Teach It
Build expressions with variable, operation, and number cards, then label each term, factor, coefficient, sum, or product.
Ask students why “subtract y from 5” is written 5 - y rather than y - 5.
Play expression match by pairing verbal phrases, algebraic expressions, and evaluated values for a supplied variable.
Use V = s³ to calculate the volume of a cube after measuring and substituting a side length.
