What Students Need to Do
- Students substitute given values for variables and evaluate the resulting expression. They use the conventional order of operations, including whole-number exponents, in expressions and formulas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student evaluates 3x squared plus 2 when x equals 4 and shows each step in order. The student can use a supplied formula with a given variable value.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may replace x squared with twice the value of x. They may perform operations from left to right instead of handling exponents, multiplication, and grouping first.
How to Assess It
- Give students A = 6s squared and s = 3. Ask them to substitute, evaluate, and show the order of their steps.
