What Students Need to Do: Students evaluate numerical expressions by following grouping and operation conventions. They keep a clear record of each step so the calculation order is visible.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student evaluates 18 minus 3 × 4 + 2 as 8 and shows multiplication before addition or subtraction. The student handles grouping symbols before outside operations.
Common Misconceptions: Students may work strictly from left to right or always add before multiplying. They may also drop grouping symbols before completing the grouped calculation.
How to Assess It: Ask students to evaluate 24 ÷ (2 + 4) + 3 × 2 and annotate the order of their steps.

Lesson moves

Arrange operation and number cards into an expression, then physically cover each part until its turn to be evaluated.
Ask students to compare two different answers to the same expression and identify the first step where the methods diverge.
Play order-of-operations relay where teams solve one valid step at a time and pass the expression onward.
Evaluate grouped calculations for ticket packages, supply orders, or shared costs.
