What Students Need to Do: Students use operation properties to rewrite an expression without changing its value. They distribute, factor, combine repeated addends, and rearrange terms when a property allows it.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student rewrites 3(2 + x) as 6 + 3x and explains the distributive property used. The student can verify equivalence with several substitution values.
Common Misconceptions: Students may distribute to only the first term inside parentheses. They may combine unlike terms or change an operation while rearranging an expression.
How to Assess It: Ask students to rewrite 18x + 12 as a product and name the property that makes the new expression equivalent.

Lesson moves

Build 4(x + 2) with algebra tiles, then rearrange the tiles to show 4x + 8.
Ask students to explain why 5a + 5b and 5(a + b) always have the same value.
Play an equivalent-expression match game with distributed, factored, and combined forms.
