What Students Need to Do
- Students write and interpret order statements for rational numbers in real-world settings. They explain what each inequality means using the quantities and units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student writes -3 degrees > -7 degrees and explains that -3 degrees is warmer. The student connects the comparison symbol to the context rather than only reading it aloud.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse greater temperature with greater distance below zero. They may write a correct inequality but explain the quantities in reverse order.
How to Assess It
- Tell students one account balance is -$12 and another is -$5. Ask them to write an inequality and explain which account has more money.
