What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve real-world and mathematical problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of rational numbers. They select operations, calculate accurately, and interpret signed or fractional results.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student solves a multistep problem involving positive and negative fractions or decimals and shows a coherent calculation. The student checks the sign and magnitude against the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use an operation from a keyword without tracking the quantities. They may lose negative signs, mishandle complex fractions, or give an answer with no contextual meaning.
How to Assess It
- An account starts at -$12.50, receives $30.75, then pays three equal charges of $4.25. Ask for the final balance with labeled work.
