NY Next Generation Math NY-7.EE.3

Math7th GradeSolve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions, equations, and inequalities.

The Standard

Solve multi-step real-world and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students solve multistep problems with positive and negative fractions, decimals, and whole numbers. They choose useful forms and tools, then check whether the result is reasonable with mental math or estimation.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student organizes a multistep solution, converts forms when useful, and calculates accurately. The student gives an estimate that supports or challenges the exact answer.

Common Misconceptions

Students may mix fraction and decimal operations without converting to compatible forms. They may accept a calculator result without checking its sign, size, or fit with the situation.

How to Assess It

The temperature starts at -1.5 degrees, drops 4.5 degrees, then rises 2 1/4 degrees. Ask for the final temperature and an estimate that checks it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use temperature cards and a vertical number line to model multistep changes with positive and negative rational numbers.

  2. Ask students to explain when converting a fraction to a decimal makes a problem easier to solve.

  3. Run an estimate-first challenge where students predict each answer's sign and size before computing exactly.

  4. Plan a budget with discounts, fees, and a refund, then check the final balance with an estimate.
