What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students solve single-digit multiplication facts and related division facts fluently. They use efficient strategies based on properties and inverse relationships.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student finds products and related quotients accurately and reasonably quickly. The student chooses a known fact, decomposition, or inverse fact without laborious counting.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse fluency with speed alone and sacrifice accuracy or reasoning. They may use addition or subtraction facts that do not preserve the product relationship.

How to Assess It

Give eight mixed multiplication and related division facts, including 7 times 6 and 42 divided by 7. Ask students to solve and name one strategy.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build arrays for difficult facts, then split each array into familiar parts and record the strategy.

  2. Ask students which known fact helps them solve 8 times 7 and why.

  3. Play a timed-for-growth fact sort, grouping answers by accurate strategy rather than ranking students.

  4. Use equal packages and totals to practice related multiplication and division facts.
