What Students Need to Do: Students add as many as four two-digit numbers using place-value and operation properties. They group addends or combine tens and ones in helpful ways.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student adds 24 + 36 + 15 + 25 accurately by forming friendly pairs or combining place values. The student records and explains the chosen strategy.
Common Misconceptions: Students may add only two numbers or lose an addend while reorganizing the sum. They may combine ones with tens without respecting place value.
How to Assess It: Ask students to find 18 + 42 + 27 + 13 and show how place value or grouping made the calculation easier.

Lesson moves

Build four two-digit addends with base-ten blocks, then regroup the blocks to make tens efficiently.
Ask students which pairs they would combine first in 25 + 38 + 15 + 22 and why.
