What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose addition or subtraction to solve a single-step situation with numbers through 20. They represent an unknown at the beginning, middle, or end rather than assuming the answer always comes last.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student uses objects, a drawing, or an equation to model adding, removing, combining, separating, and comparing. The student solves an equation such as 8 + 7 = ? and explains what each quantity means in the story.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add every pair of numbers they see or choose an operation from one keyword. They often struggle when the starting amount or change is unknown, especially in comparison problems.
How to Assess It
- Give the student 8 beads, add 7 more, and ask how many there are now. Ask for a drawing and equation that show the situation.

Ways to Teach It
Act out add-to, take-from, put-together, take-apart, and comparison stories with counters, hiding the unknown quantity under a cup.
Compare two stories that use the same numbers but require different operations, and ask students what changed in each situation.
Play mystery-box problems where partners draw a situation card and place the question mark in a different equation position.
Use classroom attendance to pose problems about students arriving, leaving, or comparing the numbers in two groups.
