What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make sense of two-step addition and subtraction stories with values within 100. They represent both steps with drawings and equations, including stories where an unknown appears in different positions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student models 35 books, removes 12 checked-out books, adds 8 returned books, and finds 31. The student writes an equation for each step and explains how the intermediate result is used.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may stop after the first step or combine every number with the same operation. They may solve the steps in story order without considering what each quantity means.
How to Assess It
- Present a bus story in which 28 riders begin, 9 leave, and 14 board. Ask how many riders remain and require a drawing and two equations.
