NY Next Generation Math NY-5.NF.2

Math5th GradeUse equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions.

The Standard

Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students solve addition and subtraction stories involving fractions of the same whole, including fractions with unlike denominators. They estimate with benchmark fractions before or after computing to judge whether an exact answer is reasonable.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student represents 2/3 + 3/4 with a model or equation and finds 1 5/12. The student uses nearby benchmarks to explain why an answer a little less than 1 1/2 is reasonable.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add numerators and denominators separately or combine fractions that refer to different-sized wholes. They may accept an exact answer without comparing it with a benchmark estimate.

How to Assess It

Maya uses 2/3 yard of red ribbon and 3/4 yard of blue ribbon. Ask students to estimate the total, solve exactly, and explain whether the answer is reasonable.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Join fraction strips for two unlike fractions, replace them with equivalent pieces, and record the matching equation.

  2. Ask students which benchmarks help estimate 5/8 + 7/10 and why those benchmarks make sense.

  3. Play error detective with fraction-story solutions, identifying denominator errors and unreasonable answers before correcting them.

  4. Combine fractional amounts from a recipe, estimate the total first, and check whether the exact amount fits the mixing bowl.
