What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use addition or subtraction to solve one-step situations with values through 100. They model joining, separating, part-whole, and comparison situations when the unknown appears in any position.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student represents a story with a drawing, number line, or equation and chooses an operation from the quantities' relationship. The student solves problems such as ? - 28 = 47 and checks the answer in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an operation from a keyword instead of the action in the story. They may add all given numbers, assume the unknown is the result, or reverse comparison quantities.
How to Assess It
- Read, "A box held some stickers. After 28 were used, 47 remained. How many were there at first?" Ask for a model and equation.

Ways to Teach It
Model varied story structures with connecting cubes, covering the unknown group so students must reason from the known quantities.
Ask students to compare two stories with identical numbers but different unknown positions and explain why the equations differ.
Play story sort by matching situation cards to equations with the unknown at the start, change, or result.
Use library checkout and return totals to write and solve one-step problems about books added, removed, or compared.
