What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use addition or subtraction to solve length stories with values within 100 and measurements in the same unit. They represent the unknown with a drawing or equation and label the answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student solves a story about a 63-centimeter ribbon with 18 centimeters cut off and finds 45 centimeters remaining. The student explains why subtraction matches the change in length.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may combine measurements written in different units or select an operation from one keyword. They may omit the unit or reverse quantities in a comparison story.
How to Assess It
- Present a 27-centimeter strip joined to a 35-centimeter strip. Ask for the total length with a drawing and equation.

Ways to Teach It
Join or separate measured paper strips, then connect the physical change to an addition or subtraction equation.
Ask students what in a length story tells them whether the total grows, shrinks, or is being compared.
Play length-story sort by matching same-unit situations to drawings, equations, and labeled answers.
Calculate ribbon, trim, or shelf lengths needed for a classroom display using centimeters or inches.
