What Students Need to Do: Students add three whole-number quantities from a story when the total is no more than 20. They use objects, drawings, or equations to show how the three parts combine.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student represents 5 red, 6 blue, and 4 green counters as 5 + 6 + 4. The student makes a ten, finds 15, and connects each addend to the story.
Common Misconceptions: Students may add only two of the three quantities or count one group twice. They may choose numbers from the story without showing how all three parts form the total.
How to Assess It: Present a story with 4 red birds, 6 blue birds, and 3 yellow birds, then ask how many birds there are. Ask for a drawing and equation.
