What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students multiply and divide quantities written in scientific notation, including problems mixed with decimal form. They choose useful units and interpret scientific notation shown by calculators or other technology.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student correctly combines coefficients and powers of ten, then rewrites the result in scientific notation. The student can explain calculator notation such as 4.2E6 and select sensible measurement units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add exponents when dividing or divide exponents instead of subtracting them. They may leave a coefficient outside the usual range or misread E notation as multiplication by E.
How to Assess It
- A spacecraft travels 6 times 10 to the eighth kilometers in 3 times 10 squared hours. Ask students to find its rate in kilometers per hour.
