What Students Need to Do: Students solve measurement problems involving permitted fractions or decimals and convert larger units to smaller units when needed. They choose operations that fit the situation and keep units attached to each quantity.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student subtracts 3/4 foot from 3 1/4 feet, obtains 2 1/2 feet, and converts the result to 30 inches. The student uses the known feet-to-inches relationship and explains both steps.
Common Misconceptions: Students may combine measurements before making units compatible or apply a conversion factor in the wrong direction. They may add denominators, drop a unit, or treat a decimal point as a separator.
How to Assess It: A 3 1/4-foot ribbon has 3/4 foot removed. Ask students how many inches remain and require labeled work for both the subtraction and conversion.

Lesson moves

Model fractional lengths with rulers or strips, solve the measurement change, and convert the result to a smaller unit.
Ask students how the unit size predicts whether a converted measurement number should grow or shrink.
Play measurement-problem sort by operation, fraction or decimal form, and whether a unit conversion is required.
Calculate remaining fabric, travel time, liquid volume, or money after a measured amount is added or removed.
