What Students Need to Do: Students read and write whole numbers through 1,000,000 in standard numeral, number-name, and expanded forms. They use each digit's place value and account for zeros that hold empty places.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student reads 507,042 as five hundred seven thousand forty-two and writes it as 500,000 + 7,000 + 40 + 2. The student moves accurately among all three forms.
Common Misconceptions: Students may omit placeholder zeros, attach a digit to the wrong place, or read each digit separately. They may include a place-value amount that is not present in the numeral.
How to Assess It: Give students 406,025 and ask them to write its number name and expanded form, then rebuild the numeral from those forms.
