What Students Need to Do: Students read and write decimals through thousandths as numerals, number names, and expanded forms. They connect each digit to its place value on both sides of the decimal point.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student reads 47.392 as forty-seven and three hundred ninety-two thousandths. The student writes it as 40 + 7 + 0.3 + 0.09 + 0.002 and rebuilds the numeral.
Common Misconceptions: Students may read decimal digits as a whole number without naming the final place. They may reverse tenths and thousandths or omit placeholder zeros in numeral and expanded forms.
How to Assess It: Give students 6.045 and the name twelve and three hundred seven thousandths. Ask for numeral, number-name, and expanded forms for each value.
