What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read and write decimals through the thousandths place in numeral, word, and expanded forms. They compare two decimals by examining corresponding place values and record the comparison with <, >, or =.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads 47.392 as forty-seven and three hundred ninety-two thousandths and expands it by place value. The student correctly records 3.408 < 3.480 and explains the first place where the values differ.

Common Misconceptions

Students may ignore zeros that hold a place or compare decimal digits as if they formed whole numbers. They may also confuse tenths, hundredths, and thousandths when reading or expanding a number.

How to Assess It

Ask students to write 6.305 in words and expanded form. Then have them compare 6.305 and 6.35 with a symbol and place-value explanation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build decimals on a place-value mat with digit cards, then rewrite each number in word and expanded forms.

  2. Ask students why 4.070 and 4.07 have equal value even though one numeral has more digits.

  3. Play decimal compare by turning three digit cards for each number and placing <, >, or = between them.

  4. Read measurements recorded to thousandths and rank the results from least to greatest for a quality-control report.
