What Students Need to Do
- Students compare decimals through hundredths that refer to the same whole. They use >, =, or < and justify comparisons with place value reasoning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student identifies 0.62 > 0.6 by renaming 0.6 as 0.60. The student explains the comparison with a grid, number line, or place value argument.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the decimal with more digits is always larger. They may compare tenths and hundredths as whole numbers without aligning place values.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to compare 0.7 and 0.68 using a symbol and a hundred-grid or place value explanation.
