What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare fractions that share a numerator or denominator by reasoning about their size. They use >, =, or < and compare fractions referring to the same whole.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student explains that 3/8 is less than 3/4 because fourths are larger than eighths. The student supports each comparison with a model or size argument.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume a larger denominator makes a larger fraction. They may compare shaded regions from different-sized wholes as if the wholes were equal.
How to Assess It
- Give 3/4 and 3/8 with equal-sized fraction strips. Ask students to insert a comparison symbol and justify the result.
