The Standard
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare fractions that have different numerators and denominators but refer to the same whole. They record the comparison and justify it with benchmarks, models, or equivalent fractions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student concludes that 3/4 is greater than 5/8 and supports the claim with a common denominator or visual model. The student checks that both fractions describe equal-sized wholes.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare only numerators or only denominators. They may also compare shaded amounts from different-sized wholes as though the wholes were equal.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to compare 5/6 and 7/8, write the correct symbol, and justify the result with a model or equivalent fractions.

Ask students whether one-half of a small pizza can be compared fairly with one-third of a large pizza.

Compare recipe portions only after confirming that the recipes make the same total amount.
