What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide when fractions name the same amount and explain the equivalence with models or number lines. They express whole numbers as fractions and compare fractions sharing a numerator or denominator, using the same whole.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student shows that 3/4 and 6/8 are equivalent and explains why. The student writes 2 as 8/4 and correctly compares 3/8 with 5/8 using equal-sized wholes.

Common Misconceptions

Students may compare only the visible numerals or assume a larger denominator means a larger fraction. They may compare fractions from different-sized wholes or change a denominator without changing the numerator proportionally.

How to Assess It

Ask students to show whether 3/4 and 6/8 are equivalent, then compare 3/8 and 5/8 and justify both conclusions with one model.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Layer fraction strips for halves, fourths, and eighths to find pieces that end at the same point.

  2. Ask students why 2/3 is greater than 2/6 even though both fractions have numerator 2.

  3. Play fraction match with equivalent models, number-line points, whole numbers, and fraction notation.

  4. Compare portions from equal-sized recipe pans and explain when two differently cut servings are equivalent.
