What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recognize and create equivalent fractions with denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8. They explain equivalence with a visual model or shared number-line point.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student generates 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 and explains the equal lengths with fraction strips. The student can find a missing numerator or denominator from a model.

Common Misconceptions

Students may change only the numerator or denominator and assume the value stays equal. They may use a picture with unequal wholes as proof.

How to Assess It

Ask students to generate an equivalent fraction for 2/3 using sixths and justify it with a drawing or number line.
