What Students Need to Do: Students read and write whole numbers through 1,000 in numeral, number-name, and expanded forms. They connect every digit to hundreds, tens, and ones.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student reads 507 as five hundred seven and writes it as 500 + 7. The student uses zero to preserve the empty tens place.
Common Misconceptions: Students may write 507 as 57 or 5007, omit a place in expanded form, or read digits separately. They may add a zero term that changes the number.
How to Assess It: Give students 684 and 709. Ask for each number name and expanded form, then rebuild the numerals.

Lesson moves

Build three-digit numbers with base-ten blocks and write each in numeral, word, and expanded forms.
Ask students what the zero protects in 604.
Play three-form match with numeral, number-name, expanded-form, and model cards through 1,000.
