The Standard
Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10. Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10.

What Students Need to Do
- Students write powers of 10 with whole-number exponents and evaluate them. They explain how multiplying or dividing by those powers changes each digit's place value.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student knows that 10³ is 1,000 and finds 4.7 × 10² = 470. The student finds 4.7 ÷ 10² = 0.047 and explains the place-value shifts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read 10³ as 10 × 3. They may append zeros to a decimal without tracking digit values or shift in the wrong direction when dividing.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to evaluate 10⁴, find 6.25 × 10³ and 625 ÷ 10², and explain one answer using place value.
