Students treat percent as a rate per 100. They find a part from a whole and percent, or find the whole from a known part and percent.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student represents 30 percent as 30/100 and solves both part and whole problems. The equation or model clearly identifies the part, whole, and percent.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the percent number as a whole-number multiplier. They may divide in the wrong direction when the unknown is the whole.

How to Assess It

Ask students to find 25 percent of 60, then find the whole when 18 is 30 percent of it. Require a model or equation.
