What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use ratio and rate reasoning to solve problems with tables, graphs, unit rates, percentages, and unit conversions. They represent equivalent relationships and choose a fitting strategy.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student completes and graphs an equivalent-ratio table, finds a unit rate, and solves part-whole percent problems. The student converts units within one measurement system with correct labels.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add equal amounts instead of scaling both ratio quantities. They may confuse a percent with a decimal amount or convert units across unrelated measurement systems.

How to Assess It

Give a recipe ratio of 3 cups flour to 2 batches. Ask students to complete a table, find flour per batch, and determine flour for 250 percent as many batches.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build equivalent ratios with counters, record a table, and plot the ordered pairs.

  2. Ask students when a table, tape diagram, double number line, or equation is most helpful.

  3. Play Ratio Route with stations for unit rate, percent, and within-system conversion problems.

  4. Compare grocery unit prices and convert package weights within the same measurement system.
