What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. They handle discounts, markups, taxes, tips, commissions, fees, percent increase, percent decrease, and percent error.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student organizes each percent as a rate per 100 and completes all steps accurately. The student distinguishes the original amount, change, and final amount.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add a percent number directly to a dollar amount. They may calculate the percent change correctly but forget to add or subtract it from the original.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to find the final price of an $80 jacket after a 25 percent discount and 8 percent sales tax. Require both stages.

Ways to Teach It
Use price tags and percent cards to model discounts, markups, taxes, and tips in sequence.
Ask students why applying a 20 percent increase and then a 20 percent decrease does not restore the original amount.
Play Percent Path with multistep cards for change, tax, tip, and commission.
Analyze a restaurant bill with a discount, sales tax, and tip.
