What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. They handle discounts, markups, taxes, tips, commissions, fees, percent increase, percent decrease, and percent error.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student organizes each percent as a rate per 100 and completes all steps accurately. The student distinguishes the original amount, change, and final amount.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add a percent number directly to a dollar amount. They may calculate the percent change correctly but forget to add or subtract it from the original.

How to Assess It

Ask students to find the final price of an $80 jacket after a 25 percent discount and 8 percent sales tax. Require both stages.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use price tags and percent cards to model discounts, markups, taxes, and tips in sequence.

  2. Ask students why applying a 20 percent increase and then a 20 percent decrease does not restore the original amount.

  3. Play Percent Path with multistep cards for change, tax, tip, and commission.

  4. Analyze a restaurant bill with a discount, sales tax, and tip.
